These images will show you what phonics will look like for your child. They will learn all of these phonics sounds and tricky words. The images have come directly from a really useful, free site -twinkl

NB - The 'phases' of learning that you see on each picture will not exist from September 2014 with the launch of the new curriculum, but the order of learning will be mostly similar. If you have any queries, please contact me.

In Nursery and Reception children focus upon listening skills, and understanding the differences in sounds made by our bodies, the environment and musical instruments. Children will explore the concept of silence, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration and will begin to hear letter sounds being used by adults.

These sounds will be taught in Reception

Children will begin to learn digraphs in this stage: that sounds can be made by using more than one letter.

Tricky words that will be taught during this time: he, she, we, me, be, was, you, they, all, are, my, her.

Children will also focus on 'unknown'/'alien'/'non-words' during Year 1. This is due to the Phonics Screening Test introduced by the Government. Here children are asked to use their phonics skills to read words, even if the word meaning is unknown, e.g.: b-l-u-g.

Tricky words that will be taught during this time: said, have, like, so, do, some, come, were, there, little, one, when, out, what.

These sounds will be taught in Year 1 and occasionally in Year 2 - this is where children learn that the phonemes can be represented in several different graphemes and vice versa.
